About
Who writes this, and what it is for.

What this site is for
Most of what a dentist explains in a chair gets explained in about ninety seconds, to somebody who is anxious, holding a suction tube and not really listening. This site is the longer version — the same explanations, written down, with the reasoning left in.
It is about hygiene and prevention: brushing and cleaning between teeth, gum health, what food and drink do to enamel, children's teeth, and what actually happens at a cleaning appointment. It is deliberately not about cosmetic or restorative treatment.
Who it is written for
The advice is written primarily for readers in the United States, because that is where most of the questions come from, and terminology, products and the way dental care is paid for all differ there. Almost all of it applies anywhere — a tooth is a tooth — and where something is specific to one country's products or system, the article says so.
What it is not
Reading this is not the same as being examined. Nothing here can see your mouth, your history or your X-rays, and general guidance cannot tell you what is happening in a particular tooth. If something hurts, bleeds persistently, or has changed, see a dentist rather than an article. Our disclaimer sets this out in full.
How it is written
Articles are written by and reflect ordinary, mainstream clinical practice. Where the evidence is genuinely mixed — and in prevention it often is — the article says so rather than picking the tidier answer. No article recommends a brand, and nothing here is sponsored.

Questions about an article, or corrections, are welcome through the contact page. Please do not send details of a dental problem expecting a diagnosis — that is not something that can responsibly be done by email.
